A goal without a plan is just a wish

What are your annual goals?

Are they financial, personal or family-related? Maybe you want to be a better manager? Or you want to take up an instrument and become the next Mozart? Maybe you want to finally get in shape after letting yourself go this year?

Whatever it is, before choosing a goal for your New Year’s Resolution, it would be wise to set out a plan of action. The reason why most people fail to reach their goals is because they do not hold themselves accountable. I believe this applies to most things in life.

Whatever your goals are, write them down. Commit yourself by writing them down. There is great power in committing yourself. There is even greater power in writing it down on paper and being held accountable to a team. (Click the link to read the latest goal setting team research from Harvard Business Review).

If you want to accomplish great things next year, write down your goals and put them somewhere you can view daily.

If you need some ideas, stop asking yourself $3 questions & start asking $30,000 questions.

What could you focus on that will maxmimize your chances of reaching your goals?

Focus on:

  • Increasing your savings rate
  • Automatically investing
  • Asset allocation
  • Negotiating your salary / earning more
  • Costs of Services (CC debt, mortgage interest, 1% advisory fees)

You can’t optimize your investing without narrowing your focus.

After you have written down your goals, the next step is to set actions to achieve them.

Make a plan with deadlines, breaking down each goal into smaller tasks so that you can accomplish them one by one. Put dates on everything so that when reviewing your schedule you know exactly what needs to get done. I like to break my goals down month by month because it allows me to fit in tasks under a manageable timeframe for my busy flow of life. Find what works for you and this will help keep you on track and know where you can improve.

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t succeed on the first try, this is normal and a part of the winner’s blueprint.
